The day may come when you would like someone to act on your behalf in making decisions on certain matters or even seeing to your day to day needs.
With a Lasting Power of Attorney you can give someone this power.
How does it work?
A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf when you are no longer able to do so.
There are two types:
This allows the person that you appoint to deal with matters relating to your personal health and welfare. Decisions could include the activities that you take part in, medical examinations or even the consenting or refusal of medical treatment.
Protecting yourself
The protection of persons who cannot make decisions for themselves is paramount. With the introduction of the Lasting Powers of Attorney, you are guaranteed greater protection; for example:
- The Lasting Power of Attorney must be registered before it can be used
- Certificate providers must confirm that you understand the nature of the Lasting Power of Attorney
- You can request an investigation of the decisions made on your behalf if you feel that they are not in your best interests
